A system of painting using colours diluted in lime water on a freshly coated surface (lime plaster).
Fresco is the most perfect form of historically notable painting.
History gives us no period, origin or even the person that first practised the art of fresco painting. However, its use goes a very long way back in history : vestiges have been found in the Egyptian temples.
In Italy, the most remarkable frescos have been found at Herculanum and Pompeii.
Between 1200 and 1600, the fresco was so popular that it reached its apotheosis with painters such as : CIMABUE, GIOTTO, PIERO DELLA FRANCESCA, BEATO ANGELICO, MICHELANGELO, RAPHAEL, etc.
